$20m lawsuit against Sheeran for plagiarism

- JESS DENHAM

Ed Sheeran is being sued for $20m (£13.8m) for allegedly ripping off a song by 2010 X Factor winner Matt Cardle.

The chart-topping singersongwriter is accused of “verbatim, note- for- note copying” for his number one ballad “Photograph”, which Cardle's songwriters Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard say steals from their track “Amazing”.

The lawsuit claims that “Photograph” is “too similar to both the composition written by Harrington and Leonard as well as the version recorded by Cardle”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“The similarities go beyond substantial, which is itself sufficient to establish copyright infringement and are in fact striking,” it continues. “The similarity of words, vocal style, vocal Ed Sheeran. melody, melody and rhythm are clear indicators, among other things, that ‘ Photograph' copies ‘Amazing'.”

Mourinho brands Rooney as the The choruses to both songs share “39 identical notes”, according to the plaintiffs, who allege that Sheeran has

best English player in decades continued to perform ‘Photograph' despite being given notice of the lawsuit. It was recently licensed for the film adaptation of Me Before You starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin. THE INDEPENDENT Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has branded Wayne Rooney as England's “best player for over a decade” as the pair prepare to work together for the first time at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese, who replaced Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford last month, has long been an admirer of the 30-year-old striker and made a host of unsuccessful efforts to sign him during his recent spells as manager at Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Speaking as it was announced that United plan to stage a testimonial match against Everton at Old Trafford on August 3 — as a reward for Rooney's 12 years of service — Mourinho lavished his new captain with praise.
