New brain map shows 100 new areas
NEW YORK: A team of neuroscientists, engineers, and computer specialists have claimed to have compiled the most accurate map of the human brain. The research has led to the discovery of almost 100 previously unreported regions of the outer layer of the brain, known as the cerebral cortex. National Institute of Health’s Bruce Cuthbert has stated, “These new insights and tools should help to explain how our cortex evolved and the roles of its specialised areas in health and disease.” Prior to this, brain areas and their functions have been delineated based on conjecture. Before this map, the number of known areas in both halves of the brains stood at 83. The number has now gone up to 183. The data was compiled after using different imaging methods on the brains of 210 adults.
