Holy Mother had spiritual wisdom

- By Swami Shantatmananda

The Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, who was the divine consort of Sri Ramakrishna, was known for her extraordinary spiritual illumination. Many would turn to her when faced by unsurmountable difficulties in spiritual life. Once, Swami Virajananda, who was one of the monks of the early days of the Ramakrishna Order, and who was a disciple of the Holy Mother, was facing a serious spiritual problem. He had been greatly influenced by Swami Vivekananda and served him with great faith and devotion. After the passing away of Swamiji, he felt a deep void. Already he was a great Sadhaka, but after the passing away of Swamiji, he intensified his spiritual practices even more. After some days he felt a terrible and unbearable headache. No treatment, whether Allopathic or Ayurvedic, could cure him. He had a very stout and sturdy frame and enjoyed very good health. But, soon he became very weak and thin. Finally, someone suggested to him that he should go and meet the Holy Mother in Jayrambati, the native place of Holy Mother in West Bengal where she used to reside very often. He went there to meet her. The Mother was shocked to see his shattered health. Even before he opened his mouth, she asked her, “Where do you meditate?” Swami Virajananda replied, “In the Sahasrara because it is very easy to concentrate the mind there”. The Mother was greatly alarmed and said, “What have you done son! Never meditate there. You can concentrate the mind a little in the Sahasrara and immediately the effort should be brought to heart and that is where you should meditate.” Swami Virajananda had never thought this was the problem and hadn’t discussed this with anyone. But, the moment he started to follow the advice of the Holy Mother, in a matter of two or three days his headache vanished completely and within a short time he regained his health.
