SERIOUS FRAUD INVESTIGAT­ION INTO MALLYA GETS STALLED

The probe started by the Serious Fraud Investigat­ion Office (SFIO) into the alleged irregulari­ties committed by top public sector bankers while disbursing loans to Vijay Mallya’s now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, appears to have stalled, with official sources saying that there were some people within the investigat­ive body who were not interested in finding out the truth.

E-mails sent to the Delhi office of the SFIO seeking their response on the matter did not elicit any response. The SFIO, which is a multidisci­plinary organisati­on under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, had begun its investigat­ions into Kingfisher Airlines last year and had summoned senior officials of public sector banks, including chairperso­ns and managing directors of the banks, who continued to give loans to Kingfisher Airlines, while ignoring its poor financial condition.

Official sources said that most of the loans were granted to Kingfisher Airlines between 2006 and 2010.
