many cylinder body parts peel off, cylinders are dented badly, etc. Dentings indicate rough handling in the LPG plants during unloading, loadings etc., as well as at dealers’ premises including the door delivery boys bringing cylinders in many vans, tempos etc. Paints peeling off from many cylinder body parts also means substandard paints used along with substandard coatings also. Evidently, fresh coatings of paint are not being insisted upon the cylinder suppliers by the oil companies. Many of the gas cylinders are very rusty at different places, besides being bacteria laden too. All this sorry state of affairs exist for both for domestic and commercial cylinders. The authorities, the oil companies etc., must do something fast to rectify this sorry state of affairs. It also appears that the very few gas cylinders that are in a good condition are getting diverted to VIPs through the door delivery boys for obvious reasons. The present cost of a filled domestic LPG gas cylinder is about Rs 800. These delivery boys also rarely bring along the weighing scales, giving one excuse or the other. They appear to be more interested in demanding decent tips during door deliveries. Why not augment substantially the import of good quality empty cylinders of steel/plastic varieties? Heavy plastic grade cylinders are much more transparent, indicating clearly the gas level in the cylinders. It is unfortunate that we have to import even LPG also annually, to the extent of 50% of our requirements.
