Trendy winter wear you need right now

- SARAH YOUNG

Whether you’ll be opting for an oversized roll neck or coddling in a cardigan, the time has come to trade in your tees for something with a tad more thermal support.

A key component of our winter wardrobes, knitwear has fast become a perennial staple for those of us who live in cooler climes, and while it’s important to stay cosy and warm, there’s no excuse for not doing it in style.

So, what should you be buying this jumper season?

Just like rolling out of bed with a duvet strapped to your back, investing in the perfect knit will help you through the blustery months ahead and luckily a wave of woolly trends have emerged from the autumn/winter runways.

From statement sleeves to ruffle trims and prominent p r i n t s , t here’s nothing dowdy about donning a pullover this season.

As seen at Dior and House of Holland, you’ll find that politically-charged slogans have migrated onto lightweight sweaters signalled by Bella Freud’s “Je t’aime Jane” jumper last year, which marked a return to nostalgic knits. Whether you’re looking to make a statement or not, sloganeering in all its forms is brash, bold and a brilliant way to get something off your chest. Alternatively, opting for a graphic print like stripes will work particularly well when tucked in to an Aline mini or a pair of highwai s t e d leg bottoms for a wi d e - retro feel.

If prints aren’t quite your thing, try creating visual interest with the one colour to be seen in this season— red. A look championed by Maxmara and Givenchy, add a splash of colour to your monotonous winter wardrobe with everything from scarlet and ruby to crimson or maroon.

For those looking to stock up on standard sweats, the enduring roll neck promises to never go out of style. As expected, high-neck knits are popping up all over the high street right now, but, thanks to Demna Gvasalia, the renegade Balenciaga designer, this time round they come supersized and ultra thick.

The same rules apply to the classic button-up cardie too. An item that has been successfully resurrected from the bottom of your wardrobe, lovers of slip-dresses and cami tops alike can scarcely clutch on to summer by throwing a weighty woollen cardigan over the top. THE INDEPENDENT
