Most valuable can become worthless

-

The question sometimes troubles the mind — how best to share of what one has, and how it would be most useful to do so? In essence, the question revolves around how one should live, to be of best use to society and self. The king was troubled with this thought too, and asked his adviser to tell him what would be most useful to be shared in charity — knowledge or food? The adviser said that was impossible to decide, for the most valuable knowledge could be worthless, and the most useless could become valuable. The king wanted proof. The adviser calls the most revered priest and asks him as to what was the best charitable act that could be done, right now. The priest said if a particular fruit seller could give a bunch of cherries to a beggar sitting in front of his shop, that act would motivate the beggar to endeavour for prosperity, providing employment to hundreds in the city. The king is excited and wants this done. The three of them, king, adviser, and priest go in disguise to the fruit seller, and the priest suggests to the fruit seller to give cherries in charity to a beggar, but the fruit seller refuses. “The most valuable person just gave the most valuable knowledge, but it is proved worthless,” said the adviser. The king nods in agreement. The adviser then pushes the king into the river, to be rescued by a street urchin, who was the only adept swimmer around. “The most useless person just became the most valuable,” said the adviser.
