About 10,000 Ukrainians living in ‘dire conditions’ amid conflict

According to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), approximately 10,000 Ukrainian people have been living in appalling conditions due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and their neighbour.

A key objective in Russia’s winter campaign to fully conquer Ukraine’s industrialised Donbas area is the eastern city of Bakhmut. The biggest battle in the recent Russia-ukraine war took place there as well. Despite the fact that both sides have lost thousands of men, the Russian onslaught has so far made little headway.

“For the civilians that are stuck there, they are living in very dire conditions, spending almost the entire days in intense shelling in the shelters,” the ICRC’S Umar Khan said at a news briefing on Friday.

In light of the ongoing conflict between Ukrainian and Russian forces over control of the city of Bakhmut, the United States recently declared that it would provide 350 million dollars worth of weaponry and equipment to Ukraine.

“Today, pursuant to a delegation of authority from President Biden, I am authorizing our 34th drawdown of U.S. arms and equipment for Ukraine valued at USD 350 million,” said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a statement issued by the US State Department on Monday this week. “This military assistance package includes more ammunition for Usprovided HIMARS and howitzers that Ukraine is using to defend itself, as well as ammunition for Bradley Infantry Fighting

Vehicles, HARM missiles, anti-tank weapons, riverine boats, and other equipment,” the statement read.

According to the statement, the US salutes the more than 50 nations who have banded together to assist Ukraine as it maintains its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

“This week, as Russia’s unconscionable war of aggression against Ukraine continues at great human cost, we are again reminded of the boundless courage and steadfast resolve of the Ukrainian people, and the strong support for Ukraine across the international community,” Blinken said. He added: “Russia alone could end its war today. Until Russia does, we will stand united with Ukraine for as long as it takes.”
