Hav­ing con­trib­uted a great deal to the cause of tourism, Dilip D Khatau, Chair­man, The Cor­bett Foun­da­tion & Chair­man, Con­ser­va­tion Cor­po­ra­tion of In­dia, spear­headed wildlife con­ser­va­tion which has played an im­por­tant role in the fourth-gen­er­a­tion busi­ness­man’s ca­reer. How­ever, he is of the opin­ion that much more needs to be done to bring out the full po­ten­tial of the niche seg­ment. He says, “We’ve al­ways been sec­ond to Africa when it comes to wildlife tourism and there are a lot of things that can be done for the seg­ment to re­alise its full po­ten­tial. The most cru­cial step in achiev­ing this is fa­cil­i­tat­ing bet­ter co­or­di­na­tion and com­mu­ni­ca­tion be­tween the Min­istry of Tourism and the For­est Depart­ment. The com­ing months are def­i­nitely go­ing to see a spike in trav­ellers vis­it­ing wildlife parks but there cur­rently is a re­stric­tion as to the num­ber of vis­i­tors al­lowed.” An­other seg­ment that In­dia has a huge po­ten­tial in but is yet to reach that level is ad­ven­ture tourism, es­pe­cially wa­ter sports, he adds. “In­dia has a mas­sive coast but lim­ited places with qual­ity ser­vices and fa­cil­i­ties for wa­ter sports. This needs to be utilised well.”
