HONOURING BAVARIA

Paulaner Bräuhaus Jakarta brings Bavaria's renowned cooking and beers to Jakarta.

- By Amanda O’Connor

For the hungry and the thirsty in the heart of Indonesia’s bustling capital city, Paulaner Bräuhaus is a welcome, if somewhat surprising, find. Overlooking Jakarta’s iconic skyline, the Bavarian beer house is a bustling venue with exposed brick walls and brewing tanks seemingly taken straight out of Germany.

The 400-seat beer house is the country’s only microbrewery restaurant serving traditional Bavarian food and its famed home-brewed beer. Speaking of beer, it is lovingly made onsite with only authentic imported ingredients by Paulaner’s brewmaster, Arie Susanto. Managed by Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta on behalf of Paulaner International, the microbrewery features customised brewing equipment designed by Kaspar Schulz, a German company that has been building brewery plant and equipment since 1677.

Arie follows centuries-old traditional Bavarian beer recipes to craft his classic golden blond Munich Lager, the rich malt and hop Munich Dark, the light tasty wheat beer, as well as seasonal brews for events

such as Oktoberfest. Even for non-beer drinkers, the home-brewed beer is tempting with its smooth flavour and crisp aroma.

Accompanying the beers – served in glasses from a petite 330ml to a massive

1l – is the hearty fare for which Bavaria is so well known. The extensive menu offers contemporary Bavarian cuisine cooked with heart and includes German breads, sausages, sauerkraut, schnitzel, salads and overflowing hearty platters.

The food is so good, it’s easy to get carried away before your main meal arrives.

Start with a basket of German breads with pretzel, salt-stick roll, sourdough and more, add homemade bacon spread, Bavarian obatzda cheese and liver pâté with a few weißbier and you have the perfect components for a great night out.

You don’t need to be a meat-eater to enjoy Paulaner Bräuhaus, the main courses include fresh salads and grilled fish, alongside the specialty platters. If you enjoy a meat-centric meal, then we recommend the Paulaner Platter – a feast of smoked pork chops, meatloaf, Debrecener, Vienna and Nuremberg sausages and crispy pork knuckle served with sauerkraut and mashed potato for the full Bavarian experience.

With a bar next to the brewing tanks, live bands on stage every night and a lively atmosphere, Paulaner Bräuhaus is a great place to unwind after work, catch up with friends over the weekend or to grab a hearty meal while indulging in the carefully crafted home-brewed beers.
