Indonesia Design - Defining Luxury
16 Years of Collaborations
In celebration of our 16th anniversary, we present to you our very first edition on Collaborations, something so crucial to design.
While creativity may come from within and is personal in nature, the underlying inspiration comes from elsewhere – nature, other people’s artistic work, past events… the list goes on. If looking externally and embracing different perspectives can expand the horizon, imagine the depth and breadth of a creative process when two (or more) inspired minds collaborate.
The event Bintaro Design District (BDD) started from a simple chat among four friends that recently culminated into a nationwide frenzy. As a result of their collaboration, BDD 2019 gathered over 100 Installations and attracted over 10,000 visitors globally – something that would arguably be more difficult if done solo (possible, but perhaps not as fun and rewarding).
Indonesia’s prestigious batik house, Iwan Tirta Private Collection collaborated with a contemporary fashion designer to take the national heritage to yet another level. Amot Syamsuri Muda was ecstatic to create pieces for Star Wars and Hello Kitty; two unlikely partnerships the rising young designer could only dream of.
Legacy furniture brand Saniharto has unveiled joint collections with local designers, one of them being a piano inspired by a sailboat. Meanwhile, Arbor & Troy, a champion of comfort, has launched an exclusive collaboration with an architect duo who double as interior designers.
When I think about how ‘collaborations’ apply to me in the past 16 years, I think about the team at id, designers, brands, hotels, developers and you, our loyal readers, who have played a part in our mission to deliver quality design content. To more collaborations in the coming years!
