Howard Lukmito and Patricia Ariani first met when they were 9 and 6 years old, respectively. The next year, he left for Singapore and then Los Angeles for undergraduate study; she followed to the same state later on for her degree. “It was the culture shock that we had to overcome during our initial dating stage,” Howard said. “There were a lot of norms and behaviours that both of us had to adjust to one another.” They overcome this challenge through common understanding, faith in the Creator, compassion towards other people and strong family values—which, in turn, will be passed on to their own new family.
