Millennials at work
MILLENNIALS, WE ARE often told, are no good. They are narcissistic, lazy, the most entitled and self-absorbed generation in history. As one critic has put it, “young people love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise.”
The trouble with that last quote is that it belongs to Socrates. It just goes to show that older people have always had a problem with younger folk. Maybe they’re just a wee bit envious of all those high ideals and that fresh-faced energy.
In researching and writing our annual Prestige 40 Under 40 list for this issue, we have interviewed many of Indonesia’s most admired millennials, our society’s leaders of tomorrow. Far from being lazy and narcissistic, we find them to be hard-working and often unassuming. Many spend much of their free time giving back to society.
These qualities also shine through in our interviews with the Heritage Millennials led by Tania Nordina. The network of young entrepreneurs she created is supporting Lovepink Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With Prestige’s support, the millennials are holding a special day of events on November 21 to raise funds for programmes like free mammogram services.
Another outstanding millennial, Adinda Bakrie, graces our cover this month. Adinda is a wonderful young lady I have known since she returned from college first time round. Now she is the mother of two lovely young children and living in Los Angeles, where she is studying for her Master’s degree. Adinda posed for a stunning photo shoot in L. A. In an exclusive interview, she told us about adjusting to life in California with her children, her latest travels, her dreams for the future and much more.
