THE MACALLAN M Black is a new exquisite creation born of a unique collaboration between three masters of their crafts—The Macallan, creative director Fabien Baron, and the crystal masters at Lalique—to create one of the world’s most beautifully designed and meticulously handcrafted crystal decanters to encase an intriguing single malt.
An evolution of the iconic M Decanter, this new step into lustrous black crystal from Lalique was crafted to reflect the diverse history of The Macallan single malt and presents a striking complement to a subtly smoky Macallan. Captured in flawless black crystal, the M Black truly encapsulates The Macallan’s deep history and represents absolute time distilled. The Macallan M Black is crafted from a very limited number of casks, telling the story of exceptional ageing and the commitment taken to nurture The Macallan spirit.
The Macallan M Black is a testament to the custodians who have nurtured and guarded the casks and their precious contents for generations. Drawn from exceptional oak casks, the second release of M Black displays a rich natural colour and has an ABV of 44.8 percent.
On the nose, there are aromas of dried fruits with hints of fresh cherries, toffee apple, caramel and orange. On tasting, these notes develop into a pleasant smokiness, punctuated by ginger and oak. Hints of sweet almond and biscuit give way to a long-lasting peat smoke finish.
The M Black decanter’s tall, slim dimensions and iconic geometric form captures the expressive aesthetic of Fabien’s illustrious creative vision and push the boundaries of traditional decanter design. Its sharp, angular facets gave inspiration to the name M Black itself, selected as a typographic representation of the decanter’s striking design. The name also conveys the black crystal material of the decanter and hints at the dark flavour profile of the whisky encased within.
The six facets featured in the decanter are Fabien Baron’s homage to The Macallan’s heritage. This design is then turned into reality by Lalique. Drawing on 150 years of mastery and dedication and its long-standing relationship with The Macallan, the storied French glassmaker brings refinement and flawless clarity to the M Black. Fashioned in the highest-grade black crystal, each handcrafted decanter unites tradition with striking originality; exuding beauty, integrity and expression at very glance.
Through black crystal—a more complex and technically challenging material than clear crystal— Lalique has reinvented traditional conventions of crystal making. By facilitating the encounter of darkness and transparency, The Macallan M Black decanter emits an enchanting vision of contemporary black crystal with spectacular depth.
