LAKSMI DE-NEEFE SUARDANA
Fashioned for Impact
Of Australian and Balinese descent, Laksmi De-Neefe Suardana swapped the tropical havens of Indonesia for the stylish streets of Melbourne and later Florence, pursuing a fashion education. However, the twists of the pandemic drew her back to the comforts of home, a return accentuated by her dedication to supporting her family’s tourism-reliant business amidst the COVID-19 turmoil.
Upon returning, not only did she spearhead the Ubud Writer’s and Readers Book Club’s digital transition, but her generous spirit also drove her to volunteer with Bali’s underprivileged children. She solidified her mark in the archipelago when she clinched the coveted Puteri Indonesia 2022 title, becoming the inaugural winner from Bali and subsequently representing the nation on the global Miss Universe stage. Her reign saw participation in multiple prestigious events, including Indonesia’s G20 and New York Fashion Week.
Yet, beneath the glamour lay challenges. Laksmi’s unexpected foray into pageantry meant acclimatising to unfamiliar terrains, facing public scrutiny, and navigating Jakarta’s vast urban sprawl. Gratitude drips from her words as she credits her success to a supportive ‘village’ of talented individuals.
Passionate about promoting Indonesian culture and sustainable fashion, Laksmi’s vision for Indonesia marries traditional textile practices with contemporary designs. For her, success isn’t just personal triumph; it’s about fostering communal growth, making positive impacts, and championing causes close to her heart.
