Magda Hutagalung, who heads up one of the fast-growing luxury property developers, shares her wealth of insights about investing and protecting one’s assets

One of many turning points in Magda Hutagalung’s life happened in 1994. From being a full-time housewife who followed her husband around while looking for properties, Magda started Dua Cahaya Anugerah, a property development company, from her mother’s garage. Fast-forward to today, and the developer has a number of high-class properties in some of Indonesia’s most sought-after spots under its belt. The company’s latest collaborations have been with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. After building The W Retreat & Spa Bali - Seminyak, three Aloft hotels are also coming up soon in Jakarta between September 2017 and January 2020.

From her years of investing in property, Magda learned a few lessons and also from the people around her. Her mother-in-law taught Magda that investing needs to be simple. Investing in property is almost the same as in stocks or obligations, according to the president director. “The longer you keep it, the better its price and profit become,” says Magda. Her principle is to not keep too much cash in the account because cash does not yield results and the interest from a deposit is not that big.

Insurance is another form of investment that also protects this mother of two, her family and their assets. “Insurance is a good investment because it gives me a peace of mind,” says Magda. Her mother-in-law’s advice to keep it simple is also applied in choosing insurance as she prioritises the protections she need most for her life.
