eggnog or hot wine, a twinkling Christmas tree, stockings hanging and ornaments scattering about, plus a sprinkling of snow here and there... Doesn’t this look a lot like a white Christmas? Alila Seminyak is bringing all these festive feelings to its “Winter Wonderland Christmas Eve Dinner” along with a four-course family-style Christmas dinner. Singing beloved hymns and hits along with carolers, or taking pictures with Santa Claus after dinner is a must.

At night, the newly unveiled three-bedroom Penthouse is the perfect choice to sleep your worries away with breathtaking views of the ocean. Spacious at 811 square metres, the Penthouse has three pairs of bedrooms and bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a dining room. Right outside is an 18-squaremetre infinity pool and terrace, along with sundeck to entertain or unwind. Banquets, cocktail parties and small weddings at the Penthouse are also possible thanks to Alila’s attentive team.

The next morning, after opening precious presents, guests can indulge in a Christmas brunch at The Restaurant either with freeflow non-alcoholic or alcoholic drinks. Chef Stefan Zijta will showcase his skills with a special Christmas-themed food display and the delicious dishes themselves. Santa Claus will also drop a visit for the children present.

For families with children, Alila has three swimming pools throughout its expansive property and a kids’ club to keep the young ones entertained when not on the beach. Running around the green spaces is another way, since architects from Singapore-based URBNARC designed the contemporary-style hotel to be surrounded by a lush garden. Garden and ocean suites all have sliding doors to wide balconies, complete with wide sunshading screens, giving an airy flow to enjoy the views.

Staying until New Year at Alila Seminyak is highly recommended because The Restaurant has a superb New Year’s Eve dinner. The three-course family-style set dinner, with à la carte options available, will be accompanied by special artisan performances. Another dining choice is to travel back to the 1920s, when alcohol was banned. A password and directions to the Prohibition-style party will be given upon registration and then guests will be entertained by special performances while dining on a sumptuous five-course dinner with wine pairing encouraged.

Afterwards, guest can join the outdoor party at the Beach Bar that peaks with a countdown and magnificent fireworks display on the beach. A band and DJ will liven up the atmosphere and, for those still hungry, a mini street-food market will open from 9pm onwards. Cure any possible hangover by joining The Restaurant’s healthy powerfood brunch the day next with drink options available ranging from non-alcoholic to a Bloody Mary selection.

Before, in between and after all these parties, visitors can pamper tired bodies with Spa Alila’s special offers. A 60-minute full-body massage includes a complimentary 60-minute manicure or pedicure. A twoday spa pass for up to four hours of any treatment a day is also available. Facial and hair treatments, massages, body wraps and baths, yoga and meditation sessions, healthy and balanced food for lunch or dinner: are all available to mix and match to personal preferences with Alila’s highest standards.

ommon Types of

heart diseases with increasing affluence and unhealthy lifestyles, coronary heart disease, also known as ischemic heart disease, is becoming more prevalent. This is caused by narrowing of arteries from accumulation of cholesterol plaques on the inner lining of blood vessel.

Another common heart disease is valvular heart disease. Abnormal heart valves can result in leakage (enlarged heart chambers reduce the heart’s pumping efficiency) or narrowing (restricts blood flow through the valve) of the heart valves. Other common heart diseases are arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm), and cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease).

Symptoms

Patients with heart disease may present with symptoms of chest discomfort, palpitations, shortness of breath, abdominal or leg swelling. Other uncommon symptoms are jaw ache, shoulder pain, or even toothache. Not uncommonly, some patients do not experience any symptoms. In these cases, the unfortunate outcome may be sudden death.

Types of Treatment

Most types of heart disease can be treated or stabilised with the use of medicines, with effects of blood pressure lowering, cholesterol reduction, blood thinning, or heart rhythm stabilization. In severe cases, specialized cardiac procedures are required. Common cardiac procedures are coronary angiography and angioplasty (stenting), pacemaker implantation, electrophysiologic studies (to study and treat abnormal heart rhythm).

The end stage of all heart diseases is heart failure, where the heart is unable to pump adequate blood into the body’s circulation. Heart transplantation is the definitive treatment for heart failure.

Limited by shortage of donor organs, Mechanical Heart Assist Device (MHD) can improve the survival and quality of life of heart failure patients.

Screenings

Screenings are highly recommended for patients with risk factors for coronary heart disease like smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure and if they havea strong family history. FPH’S high speed 640 slice CT is able to perform high quality images of the heart and other organs. It benefits patients by providing clear and more diagnostic information while having the ability to view a large portion of the body in a single session.
