o celebrate the

Centennial of Finland, the Land of a Thousand Lakes, the Embassy of Finland in Jakarta presented a special Centennial Concert at Usmar Ismail Hall, Jakarta, on December 10. The concert featured the world premiere of Ananda Sukarlan’s Angry Birds’ Holiday in Bali, a melodious piece commission­ed by Finnish Angry Birds founder Rovio.

Angry Birds has successful­ly broken the record for being the most downloaded game app in history and has been developed into cartoons, books and even a theme park. With this new work by Ananda, Rovio has penetrated classical music in an inspiring blend with pop art. “This piece is not for a new game app, but is a work that is expected to be part of a new concert repertoire in the world of classical music, using the theme song of Angry Birds as its base,” explained Ananda at the premiere in Usmar Ismail Hall.

The internatio­nally acclaimed “Elton John Experience”, starring Australian Greg Andrew as Sir Elton, will rock Bali at 7pm on board MV Sapphire Princess berthed in Benoa. Greg’s virtuoso piano and vocals inevitably leave the audience believing that just maybe it is the man himself!

The Art Director

Ong Hari Wahyu will stage his contempora­ry arts exhibition at Hall B of Galeri Nasional, the National Gallery in Jakarta. Ong carved his fame by winning the best art director award at Festival Film Indonesia 1998 via Garin Nugroho’s film Daun Di Atas Bantal. Showtime: 9am to 4pm; free entrance.

04 Snakes Alive!

Cut Snake is an Australian DJ duo consisting of Paul “Fish” Fisher and Leigh “Sedz” Sedley. Their name comes from the Australian saying: “mad as a cut snake”. Showtime: 9pm; venue: Finns Beach Club Bali.

13 Turning Japanese

Komunitas Salihara art centre will stage “Five Days in March”, a contempora­ry play by the Japanese chelfitsch Theater Company for two days. Tickets for the prestigiou­s Kishida Kunio Drama Award-winning play by Toshiki Okada are set at Rp75,000 and Rp50,000. Showtime: 8pm.

14 Look Back in Anger

Former frontman and singer with British rock band Oasis Liam Gallagher is coming to Jakarta for the first time ever. Show promoter Nadia Promotama will present “Liam Gallagher Live in Jakarta” at the Econventio­n Hall, Ancol Jakarta. Tickets: Rock Pit Rp1,265,000, and Fest Rp977,500.

Luca Mortellaro, the Italian-born and Berlin-based DJ famous for her nom de techno “Lucy” will rock Potato Head Bali with the genre’s most exciting dance music. Stroboscop­ic Artefact labels will ensure a heady rave starting at 7pm.

20 Animal Magic

Tumpek Kandang is the day when the Balinese express their love of animals, livestock and pets. Offerings are made for successful farming and animal welfare. The celebratio­n is also aimed at creating harmony with the environmen­t. Tumpek days occur in a 210-day cycle on the Pawukon calendar.
