A350-900, BUSINESS CLASS, SINGAPORE TO SAN FRANCISCO

- By Jeremy Tredinnick

“There were good reading lights, a universal power socket and two USB ports. The 18-inch monitor had no touchscreen function but the remote in the side armrest did, and was clear and easy to use. Singapore Airlines also offers its Companion app that allows you to browse content pre-flight and place movies and TV shows into a ‘Favourites’ folder for access on board. In this way, you can link your smartphone to your monitor and use it to control the entertainment. Wifi was available at US$11.95 for one hour, US$16.95 for three hours and US$21.95 for the whole flight – it took a while to connect but proved to be the fastest internet I’ve ever had on a plane.

“Soon after take-off, a tray was brought around with canapés and drinks, and my meal order was taken. There was an extensive à la carte menu – I chose the grilled asparagus with prosciutto; seared sea bass fillet with kale, raisins and pumpkin purée; and chocolate bread and butter pudding. I was not disappointed – it was all excellent. Two white wines, a champagne, two reds and a port were offered with the meal – I opted for a fresh and fruity 2015 Mud House Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, a good accompaniment for the fish. After eating, I worked on my laptop and then made up the fully-flat bed. It requires you to put it in an upright position, then flip the seat over to place it flat – blankets and pillows are behind the seats.”
