TRIED AND TESTED HOTELS

-

Trafalgar St James, London; Renaissance Downtown, Dubai; Oakwood Premier OUE, Singapore

BACKGROUND This Hilton property opened in 2001. It was completely refurbished and reopened in the summer of 2017 as part of the Curio Collection.

WHAT’S IT LIKE? Looks were impressive, with elegant lighting, mirrored surfaces and panelling that reflect the building’s art deco heritage. Despite difficulty finding my booking, staff were friendly and helpful.

WHERE IS IT? The location, just off Trafalgar Square on the corner of Cockspur Street, is superb. Charing Cross Station is a two-minute walk away.

ROOMS There are 131 rooms, including 15 suites. My Trafalgar King had a very comfortable bed, and was smartly turned out in greys and neutrals enlivened by bolder hues. Rooms feature a seating area, vanity area, Nespresso machine, wifi, free minibar (no alcoholic beverages), USB points and Molton Brown toiletries. Triple-glazed windows ensure it’s extremely quiet.

FOOD AND DRINK The Rooftop Bar, which serves cocktails and small plates, is worth visiting year round for its spectacular views. A beautifully decorated restaurant on the ground floor, the Trafalgar Dining Rooms, serves Mediterranean cuisine.

MEETINGS Biblio, the lower ground floor living area, has a members’ club look and is available for private functions.

LEISURE There is a 24-hour fitness centre for the use of guests.

VERDICT With a great location and glamour in spades, this is a good option, particularly for leisure travel in London. Becky Ambury
