PARK HILL
This 20th-century Grade II Listed council housing estate towers over the train station from its own summit, Park Hill. It is one of the largest post-war public housing developments in Britain, featuring distinctive “streets in the sky”, and is currently being redeveloped in stages. The site includes S1 Artspace, a small gallery that will become much bigger when Carmody Groarke Architects and design engineers Arup transform one of the blocks into a new £21 million culture centre. s1artspace.org
PEAK DISTRICT
You shouldn’t spend a weekend in Sheffield without walking boots. An easy train ride to Hathersage, or a 20-minute drive west, will bring you right out into the heart of the Peak District’s moorland, hills and stirring views. The Upper Derwent Valley’s reservoirs and dams are especially dramatic – they were used to perfect the Bouncing Bomb in the Second World War.
JORO
As the restaurant that has put Sheffield on the culinary map, Joro rustles up all sorts of foraged, pickled and smoked treats. It is located in a refurbished shipping container, thus boasting design as well as culinary ambition and invention. jororestaurant.co.uk
BROCCO ON THE PARK HOTEL
