Publisher’s Letter

CHECK OUT THIS YEAR’S EDITORIN- CHIEF AWARDS, WHICH RECOGNIZE THOSE IN TRAVEL WHO’VE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND IN TERMS OF QUALITY AND SERVICE.

AS A NEW YEAR IS UPON US, IT’S OFTEN THE TIME THAT I look ahead in anticipation of what the next 12 months will bring, especially in the world of cruising, of course. From new ships to new itineraries to new partnerships and more, 2018 is sure to bring nothing but excitement as we plan the year’s upcoming issues.

But let’s start with this issue. The first one of the year typically brings new departments and columns to Porthole Cruise Magazine, so look for a new shore excursion department that will highlight different activities on shore, a 48 Hours department that will suggest what to do with two days in a port city before or after your cruise, a new theme cruise department that will feature a unique take on cruising in each issue, and lots more.

This issue also spotlights American Queen Steamboat Company’s American Duchess, the first all-suite paddlewheeler on the Mississippi River, and then looks at the option of barge cruising, should you want to go really small on your next cruise adventure. We also take a look at the travel trend of millennials who are discovering for themselves the joys of luxury cruising, explore the top 10 cruise ships for art lovers, and discover Viking’s Norway through the eyes of a photojournalist who sailed throughout the country aboard Viking Sky.

Plus, be sure to check out this year’s Editor-in-Chief Awards (page 32), which recognize those in travel who’ve gone above and beyond in terms of quality and service.

No matter where your cruise plans take you in 2018, I hope this issue inspires you to simply never stop cruising. There is so much more to explore, so for now I wish you smooth sailings and a happy New Year!
