The Sky’s the Limit
Goggle at Alaska’s most dramatic glaciers from aboard a helicopter flightseeing tour accompanied by music, narration, or a little of both piping into your headset. Some helitours include a guided glacier trek or a dogsled excursion, so this can be your chance to combine several bucketlist activities into one jam-packed day.
Another way to see the sights from above is to opt for a floatplane tour, which, as the name implies, offers flightseeing in a plane that’s equipped for a water landing. Ketchikan is a popular location for floatplanes, thanks to the vast drama of Misty Fjords, which seem to go on forever. If your cruise is in July or August, you might spot bear in the wild at the Anan Creek Wildlife Observatory outside of Wrangell. For a scenic bird’s-eye view that isn’t
quite as high as a plane, try the Mount Roberts Tramway, an aerial tram that rises 1,800 feet from the cruise ship dock in downtown Juneau through the rainforest to the Mountain House, where you’re awarded with expansive views of Juneau and Gastineau Channel.
