Plan Ahead

As the all-in- one cruise buffet fades into a distant memory, personalizing your cruise experience — including what you like to eat — is now the goal.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAVE a food allergy or restricted diet and you want to book a cruise? Depending on the restriction, each cruise line contacted for this article request that guests notify them up to 90 days in advance of the sailing so the ship can ensure their needs are accommodated.

“Additionally, we advise all guests to speak with the restaurant manager once on board prior to dining,” explains Elizabeth Lytle, public relations coordinator for Norwegian Cruise Line. “The manager will coordinate with the restaurant staff to reconfirm that all dietary needs are met and can make specific dish recommendations.”

The more common dietary restrictions, such as low fat or sugar free, are often available at every meal, and even glutenfree options are becoming mainstream, although you usually have to ask for them.

Once you’ve self-identified, many cruise lines say they will customize anything on the menu to meet your dietary needs. But since not every dish can be modified well, it’s best to meet with the restaurant’s maître d’ and ask him/ her to talk to the chef about what menu items work best if adapted to your dietary needs.

No matter your dietary restriction or culinary preference, know that today’s cruise lines are at your service to accommodate your tastes.
