This port is world famous for drop-dead gorgeous beaches, but socially liberal Thailand is also known for being among the most LGBTQ-friendly places in Asia. In fact, many in the country have long considered MtF (male to female) transgender people and effeminate gay men to be of a third gender; you likely will encounter some beautiful ladyboys in front of storefronts persuading you to see a particular show. Visit the Patong Beach area, where there are clusters of gay bars, cabaret shows, restaurants, and shops. (Be forewarned that young Thai men in the sex trade can be very aggressive toward tourists in bars, so do proceed with caution.)
