Iran, Uzbekistan sign MOU on cooperation
Amemorandum of understanding (MOU) on future cooperation was signed between Iran and Uzbekistan foreign ministers on Tuesday.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Uzbek counterpart, Abdulaziz Kamilov, held talks on a range of issues, including ways to promote cooperation between the two countries in the oil and gas industry, IRNA reported.
In the meeting held in Tehran, Zarif hailed bilateral relations between the Islamic Republic and Uzbekistan and stressed the need to boost ties in all spheres.
Kamilov, for his part, said that due to the importance of the relations between the two countries, some senior officials of gas and oil, and trade sectors of Uzbekistan are accompanying him during his visit to Iran.
Regional developments, including in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria were among other issues that Iran and Uzbekistan foreign ministers discussed.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of a new wave of interest in ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) reached a conclusion on July 14, 2015 over the text of a comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran’s nuclear program and started implementing it on January 16, 2016.
The comprehensive nuclear deal, known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.
