Why November is called a ‘Frost Moon’

-

The November full moon is not too far away, and this month it is known as the ‘Frost Moon’.

Full moons are related with myths and legends and the Native Americans typically gave a unique name to the one that occurred each month which we still use today, metro.co.uk reported.

But what exactly is November’s Frost Moon, and when is the exact time to see it?

Here is what we can look forward to from the full moon this month.

The Frost Moon falls on November 4, 2017, and will be at its brightest at 6:23 a.m.

The name given to Frost Moon is because frosts begin to occur towards the end of autumn.

Frost Moon is also known known as the Beaver Moon. There are two interpretations for this name: One theory comes from the Native Americans setting beaver traps during this month, and another says the name comes from the heavy activity of beavers building their winter dams.

The other notion is backed up by the Old Farmer’s Almanac who said that the Algonquin Native American tribes as well as American colonists called the November full moon the Beaver Moon because this was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs.

A full moon is associated for its size and luminous glow.

This takes place when the Earth is directly in the between the Sun and the moon. It happens every 29 and a half days, and each month’s full moon has a special name.

This is because Native American tribes kept track of the months of the year by the lunar calendar.

Other moons this year have had unique names such as: Wolf Moon, Snow Moon, Worm Moon and Pink Moon. Next month’s moon will be known as the Cold Moon. Last month was known as the Hunter’s Moon. This is also known as the Blood Moon or Harvest Moon, because the moon is said to have guided tribes ahead of the lean winter.
