Deputy FM: World supporting JCPOA
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed between Iran and P5+1 in July 2015, enjoys global support, said the Iranian deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs.
Speaking to IRNA on the sidelines of his visit to the Russian capital to take part in the 14th Moscow Nonproliferation Conference (October 19-21), Abbas Araqchi said the meeting once again clearly revealed the fact that the world shores up the nuclear deal.
Having arrived in Moscow on Thursday, Araqchi described the outcomes of his visit to the Russian capital as favorable.
He said, “We held meetings with different individuals. They all unanimously asserted that the JCPOA is an enduring as well as valid and authentic international document to which all the signatories are required to remain committed.”
He added all the parties to the deal must implement its contents.
Araqchi said it was stressed in his meetings in Moscow that the JCPOA and its implementation are non-negotiable and no new clause or article can be added to it.
“The officials and experts, who had taken part in Moscow’s conference, all insisted that the deal should be maintained and efforts should be redoubled to guarantee its effective implementation.”
He added they all maintained that the JCPOA is not related to any other issue.
Stressing that the JCPOA has become an inseparable part of the Non-proliferation Treaty, Araqchi said the US and its president are in global isolation, as the majority of countries as well as the representatives of international organizations have voiced their support for the deal.
Also on Sunday, Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, said European countries oppose the United States’ moves in violation of the nuclear agreement and pursue a different stance on the deal.
“The policy adopted by Europe, including the Netherlands, on the nuclear issue is different from the policy of the United States of America,” Velayati said.
Velayati made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a meeting in Tehran with a senior member of Netherland’s House of Representatives, Raymond Knops, and his accompanying delegation, Press TV reported.
He added that European countries did not accept the US violation of the international nuclear agreement and would remain committed to the accord.
The senior Iranian official noted that members of the Dutch parliamentary delegation criticized the US failure to remain committed to the JCPOA and reiterated their country’s full commitment to the agreement.
US President Donald Trump delivered an anti-iran speech on October 13, in which he said he would not be certifying Iran’s compliance with the terms of the JCPOA under a domestic American law.
While Trump did not pull Washington out of the JCPOA, he gave the US Congress 60 days to decide whether to reimpose economic sanctions against Tehran that were lifted under the pact. Reimposing sanctions would put the US at odds with other signatories to the accord and the European Union.
