Iranian MP: Barzani deceived into holding referendum ‘US strategy in northern Syria will fail’

- By Sadeq Dehqan

The liberation of the last regions from Daesh control in Iraq and Syria confirms that the days of the terror group are numbered.

As the Iraqi and Syrian armies are completely eradicating Daesh, the issue of the Kurds in the Arab nations’ northern areas have drawn international attention.

The controversial secession vote held in Iraq’s Kurdistan region in September led to fierce confrontation between the central government in Baghdad and the Kurds. The crisis resulted in the capture of Kirkuk and the areas the Kurdish Peshmerga forces had seized during the battle with Daesh in 2014.

In Syria, an alliance of Arab and Kurdish troops backed by the US, have reinforced their positions after defeating Daesh in Raqqa.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry says the city cannot be considered liberated until the entry of the Syrian Army, which is fighting against terrorists “along with its allies.”

In an interview with Iran Daily, Mohammad Ebrahim Rezaei, a member of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, touched upon the ongoing developments in northern Iraq and Syria.

Excerpts of the interview follow:
