EU official: No way for renegotiating Iran nuclear deal

-

The European Union believes that renegotiation on Iran’s nuclear deal will not be possible, a senior EU official said on Tuesday.

Helga Schmid, the EU foreign policy chief deputy said as the representative of EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, who is monitoring the implementation of the nuclear deal on behalf of the EU, she would like to express clearly that renegotiation of the deal is impossible, IRNA reported.

Iran and the major world powers signed the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in 2015. Under the deal, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for economic sanctions relief.

Speaking at the 2nd Seminar on International Nuclear Cooperation: Progress and Prospect, Schmid said that EU is determined to enhance its relations with Iran, and holding such a seminar is an indication to this commitment.

The process which started from Brussels last February will be pursued in the future, she said.

Referring to nine reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirming Iran’s commitment to the deal, she said that the joint statement issued by European Commission and Atomic Energy Organization of Iran in April 2016 emphasized the advances in nuclear cooperation between Iran and the EU.

EU regards the JCPOA a potential for more cooperation with Iran, she said, adding that nuclear security is the starting point of such cooperation.

The European Union is committed to its obligations under JCPOA and calls on other signatories to stick to it, as the deal has paved the way for peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The 2nd Seminar on International Nuclear Cooperation: Progress and Prospect is being held on November 21-22 in in the Iranian central province of Isfahan.
