Former Iranian prosecutor sentenced to two years in prison
Former Iranian prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi was sentenced to two years in prison over the death in custody of a detainee in 2009, according to a lawyer representing the family of the victim.
“The decree has been notified to us today,” Mir Majid Taheri who represented Mohsen Rouhalamini, one of the three victims died in the custody, told IRNA on Sunday night.
Rouhalamini was a graduate student in Computer Engineering at the University of Tehran. He died in July 2009 in Kahrizak detention center following his arrest in connection with post-election unrest in 2009.
Mohsen was the son of Abdolhossein Rouhalamini, an Iranian conservative and adviser to Mohsen Rezaei, one of the 2009 presidential candidates. Rezaei is now the Secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council.
The appellate court session for Mortazavi was held on October 10 but due to his absence the session was postponed to November 21.
Despite his absence again, the court held the hearing and passed its verdict.
In 2010, a parliamentary investigation into the case found Mortazavi responsible for what had happened at the Kahrizak detention center south of Tehran, where those arrested during the riots were said to have been mistreated.
After the report, he was suspended as Tehran prosecutor general and the case remained open for a judicial investigation.
