5.1-magnitude earthquake injures over 50 in Kermanshah

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted the country’s western province of Kermanshah once again on Saturday, injuring at least 51 people.

The temblor injured 42 people in the town of Sarpol-e Zahab and nine others in Gilan-e Gharb city on Saturday. The quake’s depth was eight kilometers.

Earlier in November, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck western Iran, killing more than 620 and injuring over 12,000. Sarpol-e Zahab suffered half of the temblor’s casualties.

Iran is located on major seismic faults and experience­s almost a quake per day on average.

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake flattened the historic city of Bam in southern Iranm killing 31,000 people in 2003.

Following the November 12 quake in the province, more than 1600 aftershock­s have been registered in Kermanshah.
