Rouhani: US shamed itself by targeting Iran at UNSC

-

Iran on Monday warned against Daesh’s activity worldwide despite the terror group’s losses in Iraq and Syria.

In an address to Tehran Security Conference, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the Daesh Takfiri terror outfit is still active in parts of the world, calling for efforts to defeat extremist ideologies and cut their finances, Press TV wrote.

Zarif referred to post-daesh reconstruction of Iraq and Syria as one of the key responsibilities of the international community, adding that such reconstructive efforts would help bring about political stability and quell extremism.

The senior diplomat also recalled Iran’s proposal on the formation of a Persian Gulf dialogue center, adding that in the current day and age, there is a need for negotiation and trust-building measures more than ever before.

The one-day event – held under the banner of ‘Regional Security in West Asia; Emerging Challenges and Trends’ – is the second of its kind organized in the Iranian capital. More than 200 Iranian and international political figures and analysts attended the conference.

Saudi, US, Israel behind regional tensions

Zarif also accused Saudi Arabia, the United States, and Israel of fanning the flames of regional crises through their interventionist policies and invasive actions.

He blamed the Saudi-led military invasion of Yemen as “one of the key factors creating tension in the region,” adding that after engaging in 33 months of futile warfare, the invaders should have come to the realization that Yemen’s crisis will require a political solution, and that negotiation and consensus alone can contribute to the ultimate resolution of the situation.

Leading a coalition of its allies, Saudi Arabia launched the offensive to restore its favored government in Yemen and crush the popular Houthi Ansarullah movement that has been defending the nation against the invaders. However, it has fallen short of achieving either goal.

President Hassan Rouhani said Monday the United States shamed itself by trying to target the Islamic Republic at a UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting it had called on the recent events inside Iran. “A gathering and protest may be exploited by certain sides. This is natural and happens all over the world,” said Rouhani at a meeting with staff of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance in Tehran, Press TV reported.

He pointed to the new US administration’s mistakes in dealing with Iranian people, noting that the White House “keeps hitting rock bottom in the wrong approaches it has chosen to deal with the Iranian nation.”

“Over the past days, the US political reputation has been destroyed at the UN Security Council,” Rouhani asserted.

Washington, Rouhani said, “abuses its permanent membership at the Security Council and calls for a meeting [on Iran], and there, the world countries slap the US in the face.”
