Archeological artifact discovered in Sohag parking lot
Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities announced the discovery of an archeological artifact in a parking lot in the city of Akhmim, east Sohag governorate, during a drilling operation.
In a statement, the ministry said on Monday that the archeological committee, under the chairmanship of Director General of Sohag Antiquities Gamal Abdel Nasser, confirmed that the piece found in the parking is an artifact of archeological value, egyptindependent. com wrote.
The discovered piece is part of a black granite statue of King Amenhotep III of the Eighteenth Dynasty, said Abdel Nasser, adding that the artifact is a rectangular base of a rounded shape at the front.
Preliminary examination showed that the artifact portrays the King putting his left foot forward, a tradition followed in the statues of the kings of ancient Egypt, said Nasser.
In front of his right foot, there is a collection of Hieroglyphic writings which represent the coronation and birth names of King Amenhotep III, he added.
The artifact was transferred to the Sohag Museum for restoration work, he concluded.
