Remains of an ancient building with several rooms, a yard, and a tower considered to be those of Koheng Tower were unearthed during the sixth season of excavations in Koheng, Sarbisheh in South Khorasan Province.

The area, which is among the major Islamic sites in the east of the country, is located 50km east of Koheng village and its antiquity ranges from the third and fourth centuries AH up to the Safavid Era, said the head of the excavation team from Birjand University, according to Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO).

The relics found at the site included pottery, bricks and edifices from to the middle Islamic period, he added.

He noted that black andesite stones were used in the construction of the building.

Farjami said that Koheng Castle was built atop a hill to ensure greater defense against invaders.

He added that the cultural findings mainly included pottery, pieces of glass, broken dishware made of steatite as well as marbles made of animal bones, wood and metal.
