Also on the first day of the competitions, Mobina Kalivand won a bronze to take Iran’s tally to two medals.
Having beaten athletes from Colombia, India, Morocco and Thailand on her way to semifinals, Kalivand, participating in the women’s -42kg contests, had to settle for a third-place finish after she was narrowly beaten 16-12 by her Turkish opponent.
Some 950 athletes, representing 118 countries, take part in the championships held in the northern African county until April 12.
