Three terrorists, three Iranian forces killed in border clash

-

Iranian forces killed three terrorists and injured some others in a clash at the country’s southeastern border with Pakistan. The Takfiri-affiliated terrorists intended to penetrate Iran through the Tahlab region in the Mirjaveh border area in Sistan-baluchestan Province to carry out acts of sabotage and conduct terrorist acts, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said in a statement released on Tuesday, IRNA reported.

During the operation two members of the Basij (volunteer) forces as well as an IRGC member were killed.

Police and security forces have been quite successful in ensuring security in Sistan-baluchestan despite its long borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan, harsh weather and vast desert areas.

The incident came days after two Iranian guards were killed in the city of Zabol in Sistan-baluchestan.

The commander of Iran’s border police, Brigadier General Qassem Rezaei, traveled to neighboring Afghanistan on Tuesday to talk about the recent attacks and bilateral security cooperation.

Iranian military forces along the southeastern border areas are frequently attacked by terrorist groups coming from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Tehran has frequently asked Afghanistan and Pakistan to step up security at the common border to prevent terrorist attacks on Iranian forces.

Last April, 11 Iranian border guards were killed in an ambush near Mirjaveh, which was claimed by Jaish uladl.

The assailants escaped into Pakistani territory immediately after the attack. Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has also been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past three decades.

The war on the drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past four decades.
