Bernama’s Ujang: Tehran meeting helps bolster convergence
The chairman of Malaysian News Agency (Bernama) said that the Tehran meeting is a suitable opportunity to bolster convergence among members of the Organization of Asia-pacific News Agencies.
The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) chairs the OANA meeting in early September. OANA is to enhance its competitive capabilities through bolstering regional cooperation.
Speaking to IRNA, Azman Ujang said, “It is vital for OANA to adopt more professional measures to cope with widespread international media activities.
He expressed hope the Tehran meeting would help expand cooperation between Bernama and IRNA.
Given the wide-scale use of state-of-the-art technology and digital apparatus, he said news agencies are required to draw up new plans for dissemination of news via cellphones to meet people’s individual and social demands.
World news agencies should be ready for new opportunities and as challenges created by social media across the world, he said.
Since social media reluctantly disseminate fabricated news, the general public is prompted to refer to different news agencies to verify their authenticity, he mentioned.
Another tangible fact is that domination of the Western media has been decreased dramatically thanks to emergence of new social media, Ujang said.
The world is now approaching toward digitalization, he added.
Touching on terrorism, he demanded OANA play its significant role in fight against terrorism along with other challenges mainly in Muslim nations.
OANA is duty-bound to draw the world’s attention to terrorism that threatens global peace and stability.
