Tainted alcohol kills at least one

-

A new case of tainted alcohol has killed at least one and hospitalized 20 others in the southern province of Hormuzgan.

Since Friday night, a 30-year-old man has died and nine others have been on dialysis due to drinking contaminated bootlegged alcohol, the head of Hormuzgan University of Medical Sciences, Fatemeh Norouzi, said on Saturday, according to IRNA.

She added that one of the hospitalized people is in critical condition.

The incident came weeks after more than 40 people died after drinking tainted bootlegged alcohol in Iran.

At least 460 people across five provinces were hospitalized, with the youngest victim being a 19-year-old woman. Drinking alcohol is illegal in Iran. Police in the southern city of Bandar Abbas last week arrested a couple for allegedly producing homemade alcohol.
