Rouhani: By scrapping JCPOA, US goes down in history as ‘loser’
President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday that history will judge the US as “a loser” for abandoning the landmark Iran nuclear deal, adding that the whole episode proves Iran’s foreign policy was shaped based on “wisdom, integrity and precise planning.”
“The US has failed with regard to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and Trump’s failure in the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly sessions indicated that our foreign policy enjoys wisdom, integrity and precise planning”, Rouhani said at a meeting with social science scholars and researchers, according to president.ir.
Rouhani further emphasized: “When it comes to the JCPOA, the US is the loser in history.”
US President Donald Trump ratcheted up its pressure campaign on Iran this year when he personally chaired a UN Security Council meeting in September that was supposed to scorn Iran and forge an international consensus against it.
The session, however, saw member states turning the tables on the US when they unanimously supported the Iran nuclear deal and called for its preservation following the US scrapping of the deal in May despite international agencies attesting to Iran’s compliance to its requirements.
Rouhani again lambasted the US administration for its “unprecedented animosity” toward the Iranian nation, echoing comments he made a few days earlier.
“The administration that has taken office in the United States is unprecedented in its animosity toward Iran and Iranians, but despite all their efforts, they will fail to reach their goals, as it has been the case so far,” he said.
Rouhani said, “Iran will smoothly overcome the problems Americans have created in recent months.”
On October 14, Rouhani said, “In the past 40 years there has not been a more spiteful team than the current US government toward Iran, Iranians and the Islamic Republic.”
“There was a time when there was one person who had enmity. The rest were moderate. Now the worst have gathered together,” he said at the time.
Increasing public trust
The president also once again called on critics to refrain from painting a bleak picture of the state of affairs in the country, adding that more efforts needed to go into increasing public trust.
“Today, we need to increase social capital through boosting public trust more than ever, because a decline in social capital can be the biggest issue of the society, which itself originates from a decline of trust.”
“We are a powerful country and certain people must not be allowed to paint a bleak picture of the future for the people,” he said. “Our society mustn’t be worried about tomorrow.”
The government is not perfect; there may be some issues and mistakes along with its actions, said Rouhani.
“There have been some mistakes along with various achievements and successes,” he said, urging those who criticize the government to propose viable solutions as well.
