-

The speaker of the Iranian Parliament submitted the bills on the Islamic Republic joining the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and amending the country’s anti-money laundering (AML) law to Iran’s Expediency Council.

Addressing the Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi in his letter, Ali Larijani wrote the bill on Iran joining the UNTOC, along with the related details and backgrounds, is submitted to the Expediency Council, in an effort to safeguard the interests of the system as the Iranian Parliament insists on its decision about the matter made in an open session on September 25, 2018, and given the disapproval of the bill by the Guardian Council.

He also sent another letter to Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi, submitting the bill on reforming the country’s AML law to the council.

Earlier, the Guardian Council’s spokesman, Abbasali Kadkhodaei, wrote in a tweet that the objections voiced by the Guardian Council to the bills have been addressed, reminding that in view of the opinions stated by the Expediency Council, it was decided that the bills be returned to the Parliament.

Also called the Palermo Convention, UNTOC is a 2000 United Nations-sponsored multilateral treaty against transnational organized crime. The convention was adopted by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in Palermo, Italy, on November 15, 2000. As of 19 September 2017, it has 189 parties.
