ECO welcomes Iran’s proposal to form regional electricity market
A senior Iranian energy official announced that Iran’s proposal to the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) to set up a regional electricity market was welcomed and is being studied.
“Iran’s idea to establish an electricity market was raised in the ECO and three meetings were held to this end so far,” Vahid Gohari Sadr, the director general of Iran Power Transmission, Generation and Distribution Company (TAVANIR)’S Foreign Trade Office, said on Wednesday, Fars News Agency reported.
He added that a pilot plan to synchronize the electricity markets in Iran and Turkey is due to be implemented, noting that other countries will join the plan gradually.
ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey, which provides a platform to promote economic, technical and cultural cooperation among member states.
The organization was expanded in 1992 to include seven new members, including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
Iran is one of the major exporters of electricity in the region.
Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Armenia are the neighboring countries whose electricity networks are linked with that of Iran.
