Wolf saved after rescuers thought it was a dog
The animal was trapped by the icy conditions in Estonia when it was spotted by the three men who were working at the Sindi dam on the Parnu river. They cleared a path through the ice before pulling it out of the water, wrapping a towel around it and then placing it in their car, according to Sky News. The workers then called animal rescue and took him to a vet. One of the men, Rando Kartsepp, said the wolf slept peacefully with its head on his legs in the car.
Kartsepp told Estonian newspaper Postimees, “We had to carry him over the slope. He weighed a fair bit.
“He was calm, slept on my legs. When I wanted to stretch them, he raised his head for a moment.”
Vets at the clinic gave the animal a check-up but they did not initially work out that it was not a dog after all.
And it was down to a local hunter who finally confirmed what it was: A young male wolf, about a year old.
Head of the clinic, Tarvo Markson, said the animal was suffering from severe hypothermia and shock when it reached the facility.
He said, “At first, he was so tired he didn’t resist at all. We simply kept him in this room.
“But once he started to get an idea of the situation, I felt things might quickly take a turn for the worse. “We then put him in a cage.” The wolf is now in a good condition after being nursed back to health and has been released into the wild.
He has also been fitted with a GPS collar by researchers from the national environmental agency.
