Armenia, Iran look for investor to construct Meghri hydropower plant
The governments of Armenia and Iran announced the launch of an international tender to choose an investment company that will handle the construction of a 1,000-MW power plant straddling the border river Aras, Armenian Ministry of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources said in a statement.
The agreement on the construction of the power plant was signed between Armenia and Iran in 2007, arka.am reported.
According to the Armenian ministry, the investor will independently resolve all the issues related to the search for funds and other organizational issues relating to the construction, operation and management of the power plant.
The construction of the power plant near the southern Armenian town of Meghri should be completed within five years, after which the electricity generated by the plant is to be transferred to Iran for 15-20 years through a 20-kilometer high-voltage transmission line now under construction.
The statement said the deadline for submitting preliminary proposals is April 5.
The Armenian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources said the estimated capacity of the power plant is 1,000 MW, the annual estimated production of electricity is 750-800 million kwh and the volume of capital investments is about $300 million.
