Fit for a Princess ... Diana outfit for Highland Games is up for auction

- BY SALLY WARDLE

A tartan wool dress which was once worn by Princess Diana is expected to attract between £6,000 and £9,000 when it goes under the hammer next week.

The dress was worn by the Princess at the Braemar Highland Games in September 1982.

Two other outfits worn by Princess Diana will also be sold as part of the Passion For Fashion auction.

A velvet evening gown could fetch up to £70,000.

The Princess stepped out in the purple embossed dress, designed by Bruce Oldfield, on an official trip to Portugal with Prince Charles in February 1987.

The gown, which features a wide neckline and a slight slit up the leg, has an estimate of £50,000 to £70,000 and will be sold at Kerry Taylor Auctions in Bermondsey, south London.

A turquoise silk ensemble worn during Diana’s tour of New Zealand in 1983 is estimated to fetch up to £1,000.

They will be sold along with a colourful cotton dress worn by Princess Margaret in the Bahamas in 1967 and a matching feather hat and muff which were modelled by Hollywood star Audrey Hepburn in Harper’s Bazaar magazine in 1956, which could sell for between £10,000 and £20,000.

The auction will be held on Monday, December 12.

One of the earliest garments in the auction is a richly embroidered apron c.1720-30, once worn by Lady Isabella Bentinck.

Isabella was highly connected — her grandfather, the First Earl of Portland, was a confidante and courtier to King William III, while her grandmother was Anne Villiers, the Maid of Honour to Queen Mary.
