CARL STUNNED AS EX-RIVAL ‘EXECUTED’
GONZALEZ JNR FOUND DEAD IN CAR
WORLD champion Carl Frampton has spoken of his horror after learning that former challenger Alejandro Gonzalez jnr was found dead in his truck in Mexico yesterday.
Gonzalez floored Frampton twice on the Belfast man’s American debut in El Paso in the summer of 2015, before the Jackal went on to retain his IBF World super-bantamweight title on a unanimous decision.
It has been reported in Mexico that the 23-year-old boxer was one of three murder victims found in the vehicle in Guadalajara, with one of those believed to be his grandfather. One theory is that the three were executed.
“I’m shocked and horrified at this news about Alejandro, I just can’t believe it,” said Frampton, who gave the young Mexican great credit for his performance in their fight.
“He was a brave young man who gave me a tough fight, and he was a very nice guy, one of the nicest guys I have shared a ring with.
“After our fight we got on very well, we sat and chatted for a while after it.” Frampton’s wife Christine was just as distraught on hearing of the Mexican’s death.
“Absolutely heartbreaking news about the passing of Alejandro Gonzalez jr. Spoke at length with him about our families. So sad,” tweeted Christine.
Gonzalez jnr had hoped to follow in his father’s footsteps by becoming a world champion but that dream has been cruelly taken away from him.
