Brother of IRA man (19) shot by Army seeks apology

THE brother of an IRA member shot by the Army in Londonderry on July 31, 1972 has embarked on a series of one-man protests highlighting what he says is a severe lack of progress on the wider victims’ issue in Northern Ireland.

Seamus Bradley (19) was killed in highly disputed circumstances almost 45 years ago during Operation Motorman.

The unarmed teenage republican was shot twice in an encounter with the Army. However, the Bradley family have consistently claimed that he was shot at least twice more after his arrest. The family have also continually claimed that marks on the body were as a result of torture techniques employed by soldiers.

Earlier this week Danny Bradley mounted a protest outside Derry courthouse, and on Thursday repeated his actions at the city’s Guildhall. Mr Bradley mounted a banner declaring the lack of progress in his brother’s case was a ‘State Cover Up’ and the banner also carried graphic post-mortem images of the wounds sustained by his brother.

Mr Bradley said: “I am here highlighting a cover-up. I am not actually looking for the murderer of my brother. I am calling on the MoD to take responsibility and also declare that they broke European human rights law as well.

“My brother was shot twice whilst he was running and by right should have been taken to an Army Red Cross position and then to hospital.

“All I’m looking for is an apology, whether that comes from Martin McGuinness, Arlene Foster or the MoD.”
