Coroner to examine overdose student’s complaint against mental health nurse

- BY CATE McCURRY

A CORONER is to investigate a complaint about a Belfast Health Trust staff member from a student who later overdosed on antidepressants.

The body of Sabina Doll (26) was found at a house in Belfast in June last year.

The microbiology PhD student, from Coburg Street in the city, died from poisoning after taking the antidepressants Amoxapine and Venlafaxine.

A preliminary hearing at Laganside Court heard that the inquest will examine a complaint made by Sabina in the weeks before her death.

The court heard that the deceased had previously told her mother, Eva Doll, that she contacted the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust to complain about comments made to her by a mental health nurse.

The family’s solicitor explained that her mother, who attended court, can “go further than these comments” during the full inquest into the death of the Queen’s University student.

He also raised a number of issues in relation to the disclosure of documents ahead of the inquest.

James Ferrin queried whether Sabina’s notebook entries found by police after she died would be released for the inquest.

A serious adverse incident report produced by the Belfast Trust would also be examined.

Sabina, who was born in Latvia, was studying for a PhD and was sponsored by the Agri-Food and Bioscience Institute.

She was one of just three students in the UK it had sponsored last year.

She achieved a basic education in her native country.

However, after deciding that she wanted to become a microbiologist she gained A-levels in maths, physics, chemistry and biology.

She went on to study English at A-level, in which she achieved an A* just two years after learning the language.

Coroner Patrick McGurgan warned that all witness statements had to be submitted in the coming weeks.

The inquest has been scheduled for June 26 and 27.
