Irish siblings behind Stripe launch new tech journal

JOHN and Patrick Collison are to launch a new magazine that will provide insider tips from some of Silicon Valley’s most successful entrepreneurs.

The billionaire Irish brothers behind global payments company Stripe are aiming to provide in-depth niche analysis for tech specialists within the industry.

Increment will publish longform technical articles that will show how the best engineers in the industry build and operate software systems at scale.

Patrick Collison said: “As software becomes more important in the world, the practice and art of software engineering becomes more important too.

“Increment aims to illuminate the most sophisticated practices from the best companies in the world.”

The magazine will be edited by tech veteran Susan Fowler, who has previously worked as an engineer for the Uber app.

The publication will appear quarterly and will feature opinion pieces, expert interviews, how-to guides.

The company said that while the magazine represents something of a departure in strategy, it fits in with Stripe’s overall goal of helping entrepreneurs and developers to grow.

Stripe has recently announced the acquisition of a number of new businesses including knowledge based platform Indie Hackers, as well as RunKit and Teapot.

“Our hope is that Increment can help surface the institutional wisdom and practices of the most effective software engineering organisations in the world so that the industry as a whole can make faster progress,” Mr Collison added.

The Limerick duo were named on the Forbes rich list for the first time this year, with each holding an estimated wealth in excess of $1bn. They now live in San Francisco. Turnover at Stripe’s European subsidiary in Dublin rose by 65% last year.
