David’s gift hits the right note with choir

- BY JACKIE BELL

BRITAIN’S Got Talent judge David Walliams has sent a surprise gift to a school aiming to win this year’s competition.

The choir of St Patrick’s Primary School in Rathfriland wowed the judges during their audition when they performed a rendition of Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know.

With a standing ovation from the judges’ panel, Simon Cowell told them: “Loved it, loved it, loved it — You can’t ask for much better than that!” The kids are now hoping they will be performing at the live semi-finals in a few weeks’ time, but ahead of that David Walliams (below) sent the school signed copies of his best-selling children’s books, along with a personalised note. His gift came following a chance encounter with eight-year-old Bobby, who is a member of the choir.

He had been on a family trip to London a few days after the school’s audition and, coincidently, bumped into actor and comedian David at the airport.

David asked Bobby’s mum for the school’s address before wishing him luck in the competition.

“I couldn’t believe it when I opened the package,” said principal Sorcha Lyness.

“I wasn’t expecting it at all and we were all very surprised.

“I’m sure he is very busy, so to take the time to send the signed books along with a handwritten note is amazing and the children were so happy to receive it.

“Our pupils are all really big fans of David’s books so they were thrilled to see he was a fan of theirs too.

“The surprise gave us all a real boost as we await our fate in the next stage of the competition.”
